Brushes/Paint June 19 2012, 0 Comments

A fresh of batch of paint arrived yesterday along with the brushes, small , medium and large.

There a little bit of excitement with this order I had a new delivery service do the drop off, and the driver would not bring the delivery in the store, he lifted the skid down from the truck and placed in the road right in front of the store!!!!

It was a very hot and humid day and took awhile to unload the skid I was here by my self , the good thing is Lots of Paint, and the Brushes and Clear wax .

Until next time,

Wolfe Island Kitchen June 19 2012, 0 Comments

I have been working on this little project for sometime and we are almost complete.

The cottage/summer house is located on beautiful  Easy Lane at the other end of Wolfe Island.

We started the project plans and design process about this time last year.  It has been a while, normally it take much less time to install and design a kitchen, but since this is a cottage and it gets closed for the winter and it is on an island and we have to deal with the ferry no heat and water for the season once it is closed , we decided that the install should happen early in the season.

Beautiful spot and all the work done by local contractors , the clients are from Toronto and they visit most weekend from May to Thanksgiving.

Here are few pictures from my part in the project.

There are .uppers we wanted to keep the lines clean and simple to go with the rest of the cottage and we have plenty of storage in both areas

Just have to connect the range hood and we are all done.

Until next time,

Elizabeth

Furniture Appliques March 08 2012, 0 Comments

Appliques for furniture have been used since the 17th and 18th centuries to dress up dressers, and chests. You can customized and personalize your furniture with appliques,  you can stain them, paint them or distress them, depending on your taste .

We will  have appliques for sale  at the Melon Patch they are exact copies of wood carvings that were done back in the 1800's. These appliques are made of resin and they can be stained  or painted, easily glued onto many types of surfaces , including wood.

You can Mix and Match appliques to create hundreds of different looks, you can use them to update cabinets, fireplace mantles , mirrors, add some detail to chairs, the possibilities are endless, just a bit of imagination.

Crakle Varnish March 04 2012, 0 Comments

Two Part  set for achieving a crackled varnish finish like the cracked varnish on an old Masters Painting. The size of the cracks can be varied according to how fine a layer of the Step 2 is applied . The thinner the coat the smaller the cracks.

This was easy to use I had a base coat of Duck Egg Blue , coverage is approximately 20 square feet for step 1 and step 2 i s a little less. Step 1 dries quickly it is very shinny and appears wet, I applied step 2 and then used a hair dryer to dry, you can also let it dry naturally, but of course I could not wait. I applied some dark wax over the area to give it some details.

Loving this product , so easy . Other crackle varnish I used has not given such great results so quickly.

Until next time.

Words to live , love and decorate by November 02 2011, 0 Comments

1. Find your passion, I am not a rich person , I don't always get my hair cut on time, I travel little unless it is to see my daughter. My idea of a good time is going to an auction or a flea market.

2.Test your limits I took a big chance being the first retailer to bring Annie Sloan Paints into Canada. I had just signed the contract and the building I moved back to was supposed to be sold and the buyers walked out on the deal . I had paint coming and moving at the same time, it was not my best summer and I am still here maybe a little tired and ready for the next adventure.

3. Embrace imperfections, I am in the design business and have been for sometime and always said I had a wash and wear house. My kids were able to be in every part of the house. We did not wait for the kids to leave to have great stuff, we  surrounded our  home  with great finds at auctions and antiques stores, sometimes they were in great shape other times a little sad, but they made our home a  home. Now that my children are grown I see the exposure they had to interesting things , makes their homes interesting and unique. I always say they got the smarts from their Dad and their eclectic tastes from me.

4. Don't wait for tomorrow , if you can do it now. Life changes quickly and without warning and my motto is no regrets. My husband became ill and our lives changed within 24 hours for ever. I am glad we moved to the farm  that was our dream form our early age, if we had waited to retire he would not realized the dream we had , short as it was it made our lives rich and brought us closer together and each day I am more grateful for the chance we took and happy that I am still able to stay here in the country.

The business of retail is always a challenge , ( the supplies are sometimes late, the contractor that I hired to do the tear out or the put in does not always get done one time, sometimes the colour is wrong or the supplier sent the wrong item)but one thing I know for sure it that there are some really amazing people out there, and I have met more with the Annie Sloan Paints. Great conversations and the excitement when the paint arrives and when someone paints their first piece is special. Thanks for sharing with me.

In the New Year I will be teaching techniques with the Annie Sloan Paints  and will be travelling to different areas. Since Kingston is quite a distance from some of you I am looking at different locations , that will be central  to some of you. I have been certified to teach the Annie Sloan techniques and am hoping to go to England to take another course with Annie , so I can share with all of first hand, what I learned.

If you are interested in taking a course ,they will be one-day  technique oriented , drop me a line so I know where the area of interests are, email elizabeth@themelonpatch.com

Wax Brushes October 27 2011, 0 Comments

The long wait for the perfect wax brush is over , I got word this morning from my supplier that we will have these in 3 weeks or less.

Having the right tools for the project is so important and I think , it was worth the wait for these.

This brush has a circumference of 1.5 inches, the handles are lacquered tapered handles , similar to an old fashioned shaving brush. They are much more ergonomic and comfortable to hold. They are shorter  so that they don't bump into the furniture as you are waxing.

The retail cost is $26.95 plus tax , if you would like one please send me an e-mail and I will reserve on for you.

until next time
